VERBS:
When looking at a sentence it is helpful to find the VERB or VERBS 1st! This makes identifying the other parts of the sentence easier.
A VERB is a word used to express an action, a condition, or a state of being.
A main verb can stand by itself as the simple predicate of a sentence. There are 2 types of main verbs:
LINKING VERBS: tell what the subject is.
-Ty is a goofball.
-Grace and Charity were happy.
ACTION VERBS: tell what the subject does, even when the action cannot be seen.
-Ellie arrived to class on time.
-Lucas disliked his assigned seat.
The simple predicate, or verb, may consist of two or more words. These words are called a verb phrase. A verb phrase is made up of a main verb and one or more helping verbs.
HELPING VERBS: help the main verb express action or show time. The MAIN VERB below is in all capital letters. The helping verb is in bold.
–Larry will be MOVED into his new house by tomorrow.
–Ellie’s grandma had been SHOPPING for hours.
–Owen’s dog did GO to the vet.
–Gavin’s cat is MEOWING a lot.
