GRAMMAR
1st: Find the verb or verbs – CIRCLE them & label:
•Main Verb - Always a loner!:
– AV = Action Verb (action you can see or not see; shows what the subject does or did)
- Christopher swings the bat.
- The teacher graded the test.
– LV = Linking Verb (links the subject of a sentence with a word or words in the predicate
that name or describe the subject)
- Francis was a lifeguard.
- Amber is cheerful.
•HV = Helping Verb (always with another AV or LV verb; never alone)
2nd: Draw a vertical LINE to separate the complete
subject & complete predicate.
3rd: Find the subject or subjects
•Ask who or what _(verb or verbs)______?
•UNDERLINE the subject or subjects.
**If a proper noun is used as the subject, all parts make up the simple subject (ie Mrs.
Siebenaler, Dr. Jones, Times Square).
***Do NOT underline or circle conjunctions (and, or, but).
