8 Parts of Speech:What are parts of speech, & why do I need to know them?
In the English language, WORDS can be considered
the smallest elements that have distinctive meanings. ONE WAY to remember them: Ashley Always Carries Ice Near People Playing Volleyball! Based on their use and functions, words are categorized into EIGHT TYPES or PARTS OF SPEECH: |
1. A = Adjectives: a word that DESCRIBES A NOUN OR PRONOUN,
and answers one of the questions: what kind? which one? or how much/many?
ARTICLES (a, an, & the) are also adjectives.
2. A = Adverbs: a word that DESCRIBES A VERB, ADJECTIVE, or other ADVERB; and usually ends in -LY.
Answers one of the questions: when? where? how? or
3. C = Conjunctions: a word that JOINS two words, phrases, or sentences together.
4. I = Interjections: one word that expresses SURPRISE or EMOTION. Examples: No! Wow! Whoa!
5. N = Noun: a word that names a PERSON, PLACE, THING, or IDEA.
6. P = Pronouns: a word that is used IN PLACE OF A NOUN.
7. P = Prepositions: a word used to LINK a noun or pronoun to another part of the sentence.
8. V = Verb: a word that shows ACTION or STATE OF BEING (Linking).
